Art as Source

Does anyone have forms of art that they do that they feel less attached to?

For me, it’s painting, which I do when I’m less into what my brain seems to view as forms of art I’m more attached to (e.g. writing). It lets me continue to be creative so that part of me doesn’t shrivel and die, but it feels lighter, if that makes much sense. Although, part of me feels bad that I feel less attached to it, and as though I’m not doing that form of art the justice it deserves because I care less.

That aside, painting feels like something of a source, because ideas of poetry seem to come up, or I find myself translating the art pieces into poetry pieces.

I’m curious to know if anyone else has other forms of art that they fall to when they aren’t writing poetry and if the ideas that spark these other forms bleed into poetry (or, rather, find themselves eventually translated into poetry or vice versa).

  1. Hey Amanda!

I’m hesitant to say I am not attached to other art forms I practice, thought I respect why you phrased it that way. I’m sure for you as well as me writing is our first passion, our first craft, and the others are just “other art forms” to us.

But, since I know what you mean, I do have other art forms! I also enjoy painting, and would probably consider this my least strong artistic ability. However, I love the freedom that painting gives you, and while I’m sure most would argue poetry gives you a lot of freedom as well, I definitely don’t feel that way as I’ve advanced in workshops. Writing definitely comes much more natural to me, but I guess because I’m “less attached” to art forms like painting and drawing, I don’t mind as much that I’m not ‘obeying’ all the rules of that art. I do mind this in my writing thought.

But, yeah. Collaging and drawing are my main alternative art forms. I’ve been really into figure drawing lately, and been drawing them alongside poems in my journals. I think my more recent poems have been more bodily because of my focus on figure drawing. I’m super interested in the overlap between art forms and how they can benefit our primary one. Essentially, exploring painting and collaging and drawing as sources for poetic inspiration. So, on your point about translating art pieces into poetry, I totally feel that. And i think that kind of translation is super necessary.
